Backstepping Control of NPC Multilevel Converter Interfacing AC and DC Microgrids

This work introduces modified backstepping methods to design controllers for neutral point clamped (NPC) converters interfacing a DC/AC microgrid. The are derived from proper converter model, represented in dq coordinates, and designed regulate the DC voltage balance two NPC capacitor voltages through offset sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) carriers. averaged separated dynamics also enforce nearly AC currents at given power factor. proposed evaluated MATLAB/Simulink simulations experimental implementation using laboratory prototype. Simulations results show that microgrid steady state transient operation, even with load disturbances or reference changes, while enforcing factor injected reactive power. backstepping-controlled is bidirectional, converting energy renewable sources storage systems charging AC. highlight effective balancing of voltages.
